Herbal Tea

Herbal Tea from Ceylon

Herbal tea is not technically tea. Tea is a plant. What we call herbal “tea” is actually beverage made from the infusion or extraction of herbs, spices, bark or other plant material in hot water. Unlike natural tea, herbal teas rarely (though sometimes do) contain caffeine.

How are these drinks are distinguished from true teas (prepared from the cured leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis)? Herbal teas—or “infusions” as they are called in some parts of the world—feature a huge range of flavors and effects that are as diverse as the plants that are used to prepare them. Herbal teas can provide stimulation, relaxation, pain relief, and even digestive aid alongside wonderful and exotic flavors that conventional tea can’t.
